Turn your power off

In your home you have a main breaker.  If you are having an issue with your power, you want to go and turn off your breaker.  When looking at the breaker you will see a main breaker switch at the top of the panel.  When pulled, it will shut everything off.  This may not be needed but know where it is in case you know you have to shut everything off.  In many cases you will just be able to just turn off a specific breaker to a specific outlet.  This can be done by flipping the breaker next to the coded label. 

Stay away from water and frayed lines

Water is a conductor of electricity. If you have a wet area or if water is in contact with your area, don’t turn on the power.  In some cases, after a flood or a major storm your location will be filled with water.  If this happens you want to turn off your main breaker and call for a professional.

Frayed wires and overloaded outlets are another thing that you will want to take under consideration.  If you have a wire that is frayed or has exposed areas to it, you want to remove it safely and replace it with a fresh sealed wire.  If you have bent prongs or overloaded outlets you will want to address these issues as well.
